Modifications
GSM Solutions can modify
the software in mobile phones in
order to facilitate various uses.
We have a wide range of available
modifications,
Network Monitor
activation, De-branding, Flash file modification
and Fone-Calc among others, all explained in
greater detail below. If you have a particular modification in mind which is not listed below please Contact Us, as below is just a small example of whats possible. We are always open to new and fresh ideas.
De-Branding / De-customization
We offer a De-branding service for most models
De-branding a phone basically means to remove all operator logos
and menus etc, then replacing it with the manufacturers original software/firmware. Many networks such as Vodafone for
instance heavily brand their handsets which often restricts certain functions from being used as the manufacturer intended them to.
The benefits of de-branding your phone can be great.
You will notice all the menu systems are clearer, un-restricted, and often faster too. We also use the latest firmware to
date, which normally has vast improvements on your old firmware. This often removes any software glitches that your phone
previously had. Also some network firmware's prevent you uploading ringtones & pictures via cable etc, or manually setting
your internet homepage, also predefined themes, images, sounds, locked WAP profiles and links are now enabled for you to edit.
De-branding also frees up memory
Example: Vodafone Live Debranding Benefits
(1)Vodafone Menus, Icons and StartUp Logos Removed
(2) Unlocked and Uncapped MMS Settings, WAP Settings and Browser Settings
(3) Browse Menus 20% faster based on JBenchmark test
(4) Battery Life now is Optimized (shorter time to standy mode)
(5) Play any MP3 files without any restriction, MP3 totally uncapped
(6) Play any MP3 files as ringtones
(7) Play any MP4 files without any restriction, MP4 totally uncapped
(8) Standby crash fixed / improved
(9) Increased call and Media Player volume.
(10) Fixes the O2 GPRS issues
Network Monitor Activation
Network Monitor is a sophisticated
hidden menu in all Nokia phones,
which can be activated to provide
a phone user with special network
information including network parameters,
locations area code, cell identification
and more. Once this menu is activated
on a phone it can be accessed like
any other menu. Accessing the menu
while on a call will provide a user
with the general location of where
their caller is calling from and
much, much more. Network monitor
will give you a huge amount of information
about your phone and the network
you are connected to.
At the moment we only have the ability
to activate Network Monitor on Nokia
DCT3, and some selected DCT4 handsets but we are currently
working
on new technology that will enable
us to activate it on Nokia BB5 platform handsets

Once Network Monitor is activated,
phones have between 33 and 144 test
menus, including the following:
Test 01 - Current band information
 |
Test display 01 gives basic information
about the active base station (BS)
link.
In the picture, "29" tells
the channel number in use, "-87"
shows received signal power in dBm
(minus sign is not displayed if the
value is smaller than -99), "xxx"
displays the transmit power in use
(preceded with "*" if the
transmitter is on), "0"
and "1" indicates the time
slot (0 - 7) and timing advance (0
- 63), "x" is received signal
quality (0 - 7), and "CBCH"
tells the channel type.
It is difficult to understand the
displays if you are not familiar with
GSM technology. In the test display
01 the most interesting values are
the received signal power that tells
about the link quality (less negative,
better quality), and the channel number.
By following the CID (Cell ID) number
on display 11 it is easiest to see
cell change.
In dual-band phones the channel number
tells if the phone is using the 1800
MHz band. (Normally you cannot see
which band is in use). If the channel
number is greater than 512, the phone
is on the 1800 band.
Test 20 - Battery charging status
 |
The charge status of the phone is
displayed with test 20. In the picture,
"398" shows the battery
voltage in cV, "T+23"
tells the battery temperature in OC
(you can use your phone as a thermometer),
"FastC" indicates the active
charging mode, "0" displays
the charging time, "C 41"
indicates the charging voltage in
dV, and "1017" is the
approximate battery capacity in mAh.
Test 60 - Call counters
 |
The phone counts calls and call
attempts constantly and the current
counter values are shown in network
monitor display 63.
In the picture above,
"MO" displays the party
who disconnected last call (MO =
mobile originated/you have ended
the call; MT = mobile terminated/the
other party or network ended the
call; UN = unknown origin; IN =
phone itself ended the call),
"643" is the count of
call attempts made with the phone,
"421" shows the number
of successful calls called with
this phone (answered calls),
"391" counts the incoming
call attempts, and
"097" shows the number
of calls you have answered.
Note that the counters will "wrap-around"
when they reach "999".
You can reset the counters with
the network monitor display 60 (and
with 40 & 240 but they clear
other things also). To reset the
counters, enter the display 60 via
the Network Monitor menu (entering
the display 60 with arrow keys does
not reset the counters).
Flash File Modification
When a phone company manufactures
a phone, it comes pre-programmed
with software in the form of a flash
file. GSM Solutions can extract
the flash file from any phone and
modify it in a number of ways. If
you would like your phone modified
in a specific way please let us
know and we will see what we can
do. Some of the modifications available
include:
- putting a security code on text
message inboxes for added privacy
and security
- Modifying older Nokia phones
so that they have "fading
lights" like the Nokia 8310.
- Adding picture editors to phones
...and much more.
